Apple keeps succeeding in any business sector it approaches. Its smartwatch is in fact now one of the most popular watches in the world, and not only in the ‘smart’ sector.
According to Strategy Analytics in a post titled “Apple Watch Outsells Entire Swiss Watch Industry in 2019”, a new research from their Wearable Device Ecosystems (WDE) service reveals that the Apple Watch outsold the entire Swiss watch industry by a huge margin in 2019 shipping 30.7 million units worldwide, with a growth of 36 percent from 22.5 million in the previous year. In comparison all Swiss watch brands combined sold 21.1 million units worldwide with a decrease of 13 percent from 24.2 million in 2018.
Neil Mawston, author of the post, writes: “Traditional Swiss watch makers, like Swatch and Tissot, are losing the smartwatch wars. Apple Watch is delivering a better product through deeper retail channels and appealing to younger consumers who increasingly want digital wristwear.”
Popular in North America, Asia and Western Europe, it’s not surprising that it’s the youngest and most technologically advanced population that wants to wear a digital device on their wrist. Nevertheless this result makes us reflect on how consumers’ daily habits are changing and how wearable technology is revolutionizing our daily routines.
But let’s take a better look at the last Apple watch, released to the market last September.
It’s Apple Watch Series 5 with price starting at $299 on Apple website with trade-in of Apple Watch Series 2 or Series 3 this February and at $464.98 on Amazon.com at the time of writing. The best feature of the new Apple watch is probably the Always-On Retina display, that means that the display will be always on, presumably without draining battery, and you can look at the time, or anything else on your home screen, without having to raise your wrist or tap the screen.
The Apple Watch Series 5 has a high degree of customizability and through the Apple Watch Studio you have the possibility to choose a case and pair any band to create your own style. Besides it is available in different materials. So you can also choose among aluminium, stainless steel, titanium, or ceramic.
But it’s the wide selection of apps available in the App Store that definitely makes wearing an Apple Watch an outstanding experience. The ECG app gives you a read on your heart rate and heart rhythm. The new Noise app alerts you when decibels rise to levels that are dangerous for your hearing. The new Cycle Tracking app lets you log information about your menstrual cycle. With advanced workout metrics, GPS, compass, ground elevation and water resistance to 50 meters, this smartwatch can accompany you in any activity or exercise. The Activity rings track your progress and are a motivation to stay active and sit less. And if you are a competitive person, you can even challenge your friends.
There is no need to bring your smartphone with you at any moment any more. With the smartwatch with the cellular feature you can answer while you are running, or text in a noisy crowd, or stream music from wherever you are. And after your jogging session, why not stopping on the way home at the nearest coffee bar for a light refreshing breakfast? All you need is your watch in combination with Apple Pay. Do you need to send money to a friend to buy tickets for a football match? Done. Do you need to rent a bike? Done instantly and securely with Apple Pay.
